[Image description: A blue background fades to white, with a grey spiral around a torn bit of dictionary with the words "Melacholy. adj." and "1. Gloomy; dismal" legible, and the title "Before Depression, 1660-1800" beneath that in blue]This conference program titled "Before Depression: The Representation and Culture of Depression in Britain and Europe, 1660-1800," caught my attention today--the conference itself is just part of a three-year project that also includes an ongoing lecture series, planned publications and an exhibit this summer of visual representations of depression in the 18th century. Too bad for me it's all happening at the University of Northumbria and the University of Sutherland--but good for any of you who happen to be in that neighborhood. If you attend any component of this project, I'd love to hear more about it.

iibbuylwGlad to see you've picked this up. I'm the Director of this project, which is supported by the Leverhulme Trust. We'd be delighted if any readers in the region could make the conference, or parts of it, but for those of you further afield you might be interested in the podcasts we have on the website. There are nine of these so far, and they're the public lectures we've been holding at Northumbria and Sunderland on various aspects of depression in the eighteenth century. All downloads are free - just follow the links. The art exhibition is packed with names, including Durer, Hogarth, Blake and Goya. It's at the Shipley Gallery, Gateshead from mid June until the end of August. Admissions is free, so do drop by if you're around.

i need to ask you this, i have been in depression and i consulted a doctor, he gave him 60 valium and 30 clonazepam with 6 months of refills. i have a history of drug abuse, somehow I don’t trust this doctor at all, that seems WAY excessive for one visit. i don’t even have attacks. i just have “anxiety & depression”. I counted the pills he gave me, the clonazepam was picked up on tuesday and is already gone. The valium had 12 missing after the first 12 hours. Do I call the pharmacy and tell them to REALLY watch for early fills? ( i have no insurance). Do I call the doctor and tell him to get his shit together? Im so lost and scared. Don’t know where I can go or who I can talk to.
my questions remains as glynis is a director of this program, are we going to discuss doctors when they suggest such medicines? do i have an organization/programs BACKING and support if i want to confront doctors who give such medication?

I'm sorry John, I don't have any ideas for you. The conference is about depression before 1800--it's historical and literary, not at all about present-day practice.
It has almost been proved that women are much more vulnerable to depression as compared to men. To put it in figures one in five women is hit by depression which is double the figure in men. Though the real and exact reason behind this sort of uncanny phenomenon still eludes human intelligence, there are an ample lot of depression medications that have successfully thumped depression, as for example the antidepressants like xanax valium .
