Did you see that he was talking on a freakin' cell phone when he tripped and fell down stairs, which is the injury that led to his death? What a waste. And all because he couldn't wait to make or take that call.

And no, it's not 'cause he was disabled. A few months ago, a perfectly able-bodied, middle-aged man was leisurely crossing the train tracks at the deeply suburban station near my house while a train was approaching. It was slowing for its regularly scheduled stop, but nevertheless the driver sounded the 80-decibel horn to warn the guy to hustle across because she was not going to be able to avoid hitting him if he didn't. He showed no signs of awareness that the train was approaching. He never altered his pace. The train clipped him as it whooshed to its regular stopping place, tossing him to the side and knocking him out. Though he scared the crap out of the driver and everyone who witnessed the incident, and halted train traffic and traffic on all roads which cross the tracks at this location for an hour while everything got sorted out, he was lucky to wake up with just a concussion.

You know why he couldn’t feel the rumbling of the oncoming train or hear the 80-decibel horn of the train sounding just yards away from his head? Yup. He was on his cell phone.

Freakin' cell phones. Freakin' multitaskers.

Everybody! Put the phone down and live your life! You're not saving any time if you get yourself killed.

Yup. Cell phones and staircases don't seem like a good mix. Cell phones and train tracks are DEFINITELY a bad mix.

My service is usually so bad that I can't move around much without losing the call--maybe I'll start thinking of that as a safety feature!
